Final Piece

In my grid i tried to to show when people stay a long time in one pace by making it opaque , and the pictures that are placed on top of them shows things what they do in that certain place that is out of the ordinary.

I used faces of five different women to give my characters more of a personal touch, emphasizing that everyone is different, and the lifestyle i chose are these women only.

Grid Development

I decided to show 24hrs of every characters life, where i place an image in every hour to show what they are doing. This made it easier for us to follow and compare.

For Example, Her you can see that the business woman wakes up at about 5 and takes a jog from 5 to 6. Then she takes a shower and gets ready between 6-7. You starbucks can see here that she wears casual but still professional clothes, and that she also gets ready in only an hour since she has to get to her office on time. She doesn't have breakfast but has a coffee on the way to work. She drives a Porche Cayenne which shows that she is very well off.

My design was made so that you can see what they do every hour and also see what they eat, drink, wear and so on.

After First critique

After our critique we were discussing, i saw how we were used to putting people under categories or stereotyping them due to what they work, or what they where or how they look, and that most of us have categorized our lifestyles under the persona's occupation. Through that i decided to look at a person and try to live in their life, and see what they do every hour to really determine and compare their lifestyles.

I decided to choose five women, and see how age, occupation and belief really change each lifestyle.

Five categories:
Businesswomen
Housewife- working at home
Student (university)
Model
Artist(waitress)

Businesswomen:
30 years old
graduated early
has her own business
she is well off/ very independent and structured

(followed my aunts life and see how she works and read about people's experiences to determine the lifestyle)

Student:
Just learning to be independent
Rushed
Face-booking
Drives

(i tired to mimic what most students here do)

Housewife:
She has a son
Works from homed
her son and husband are priority
she is inpendant, multitasking

Model:
Running all over the place
hectic life

Artist/Waitress
Does a lot of things to cope
Loves art
Casual
bar-tends at night

Project 3_Production

Method Title: Production
Method Activity: After the design stage was complete the group focused on producing our 20-spread catalog. We added additional spreads to the basic 15 lifestyles to make a more complete experience. After the printing demonstration given by Peter we had a better understanding of how to create the technical file.
Method Objective: The objective was to solve the technical issues with numbering the spreads and learning how to arrange the different pages.
Method Outcome: We solved the binding issues and numbered the spreads according to the four categories.

Project 3_Typeface Development

Method Title: Typeface Development
Method Activity: Choosing typefaces according to the personalities of our lifestyles. As a group we categorized each our five lifestyles under a general caption: Casual, Practical, Hectic and Dramatic.
Method Objective: The purpose of this stage was to unify the diversity of our lifestyles for simple legibility of the type catalog. We wanted to ease usability for the user of the catalog.
Method Outcome: The outcome of this stage was the final typeface decisions. We coordinated with each other to avoid typeface repetition and divided them into categories.

Project 3_Color System

Method Title: Color System
Method Activity: With the grid in place the next step was to develop the color system used in the catalog. Working with the simplicity of our layout, we initially began with CMYK colors. Our experimentation consisted of adding layers of black and white over blocks of color to create a unified system of value.
Method Objective: To create a rhythm and visual unity through color.
Method Outcome: Four colors used in categorization of the catalog.

Project 3_Grid Development

Method Title: Grid Development
Method Activity: Finding a grid, we started by researching different types of spreads and layout designs. Using our textbooks and books from the library we discovered a variety of creative layouts that could be useful. After searching and experimenting, the group decided to stick with a simple and effective layout, so that all three members could implement their designs on the same grid.
Method Objective: This was the first phase of the third project. Our objective was to find an effective grid with a simple system and easy to implement through many spreads.
Method Outcome: The outcome of our layout was a simple square grid, aligned at all edges with no spaces between them. The squares were 1x1 cm with a no margins.

P2 process

For this part of the project we were told to look at different types of people and what their lifestyles.
First i chose:
  • Housewife
  • Student (college)
  • Businessman
  • Athlete
  • Model
After looking at these i was interested at what artifacts the opposite of these might use:
for example
  • What will a housewife use, and what will a "househusband" use
  • Student, male and female
  • Businessman and Businesswoman
  • Athlete male and female
I found it interesting looking at the change in the artifact made by the gender of the user.
For the house-wife and househusband, i tried to compare how different the types of people would run their house, how they would shop, what would they by, what car they will drive and what might they wear. I compare and contrast and found it interesting with the difference in some of the things.

Lifestyle vs personality

In class we had a discussion about what a lifestyle is and how personality effects it.
A lifestyle is a way of living, there are many factors that effect a persons lifestyles, such as time and place, social status, and economical status. I feel that this can determine a way of living for some people, but i also think that people could have the choice to live the way they are living. For example, a rich person could live like a he spends a billion everyday, while another rich person could choose to live like he is living on a dime per day.
I feel that a persons personality can have an effect on ones lifestyle, but effects the style of the artifact, but social and economical status effects the type of artifact used .

Part 2 (collection of images)

We were given five Artifacts :
  • Cars (for cars i tried to look at different angels to take the car, and i though about the wheel and rings can determine the way a person drives their car, how fast they go, and how much time they take, to clean and change their car)
  • Clothes (i looked at what people wear in their daily lives at school/workplace)
  • Food ( i looked at the type for food that we all eat, and it was obviously "junk" so i made a collection of that)
  • Phone ( with phones i took the photograph through the angle that i would usually choose a phone, where i would look at the screen, keypad & hold it in the middle to see how it fits in my hands)
  • Furniture ( i looked at classical furniture, and tried to focus on the armrests)
Then i added my own artifacts:
  • Shoes (with shoes i chose to focus on trainers, i tried to take a variety of different types of trainers, for different uses)
  • Bags ( i looked at different bags for different ages and occasions)
  • Jewelery ( i focused on bracelets and tried to take bracelets on occasions and ages)
  • Ground texture ( i felt that ground texture could what life a person lives, by how expensive it is. it could determine that type of occupation the do)
  • Toys ( i looked at what younger children play with. i thought it would be interesting to see what different ages play with.

While taking photographs, i tried to look at the person that i might be taking the artifacts from, then put them in the stereotyped category, but then see what lifestyle they could be living.

Project Brief

This project is about observing the people around us and to fully understand how they live their lives. We are supposed to look at the artifacts that they use throughout their daily life. Looking at them will help us understand how diverse people are and how situation can limit what people buy, use and abuse.
After that we will go through an analyzing and organizing phase which will determine the lifestyle that we will fully document in the final piece, the catalogue.
To start out i will have to look at different people and what they use for transport, food and clothing.
