process c

so i tried to solve the problem of the weeks by actually counting and putting the average and then just make the rectangles in sectors but that also be came to complex and i could not figure out what to do i felt like hit another wall so i just tried to extend them, so instead of January having 4 weeks it got five weeks.
and that is how it look like but i still had the problem of having whit spaces which look out of place and this was all because i could not find a solution to the problem of the weeks. and the colors i used the red to show that these are the most important tournaments and they are the grand slams, and the gradient of the red is the masters tournament which are the second best tournaments and the gray ones are the Davis cup which is a team based tournament and it takes place through the progression of the year.
i also search the longitudes of the countries because we cant use type so i will be using the longitude to represent the countries

Mario, P1.1 Process/c

For the last stage of this project I had a few things to consider since my last draft:

- Develop an easier way to navigate through the calendar
- Develop a system where the user can access information based on days AND also based on
months
- Create a cover and a back cover
- Redesign the layout of the pages so the calendar doesn’t look like a phonebook.

With all these considerations in mind, I have made what I think is my final product. For the navigation aspect, I made tabs for each day of the month making it easier for the user to look up a specific day of the year. To help the user find/add names based only on the month, I designed a system where the user has to fill up the day of the year where a name has been written. This will be on the last page and the user can just look at this page and see which days of each month have a birthday. This process is illustrated on the back cover. For the layout of each page I kept the idea of the months being inside “balloons” and I chose to do the separations of each month with handmade lines. I’ll post my final calendar after the critique on Monday…

process and thinking C

This  time I was thinking  about an object that can be related to diet and can be beneficial for my calendar.
So i thought about a measuring tape, because personally and as usual when you do diet, you have to measure different parts of your body, such as the hips, hands, and so on.
I looked for images of a measuring tape that is used to measure body parts, and I tried to analyze what does it have.

First  I researched what is a measuring tape?
So, what is a measuring tape ?  ....
is a flexible form of ruler. It consists of a ribbon of cloth, plastic, fiber glass, or metal strip with
linear-measurement markings with Metric units and sometimes additionally imperial units. It is a common measuring tool.  It 's  flexibility allows for a measure of great length to be easily carried in pocket or toolkit and permits one to measure around curves or corners.

This is a measuring tape that is defined by two measuring units.

This is a measuring tape, which is defined by one measuring units which is Inches.

Therefore, I decided to do my calendar as a measuring tape that could be easily to understand.

dero-P1.1 Process/c

I started Subtracting the numbers for each period, to see the difference between each period, and to see the average between the numbers. I noticed that the fastest period for growth was from birth till 1 year old.
I wanted to use my scale to be each 3 month for 5 years,

P1.1 Process/c After surviving the critique...

1) Never, I say NEVER volunteer to have your work critiqued first...it will lead to major ego decapitation!

No, I'm just kidding! As much as today’s critique was harsh, it was really beneficial. It made me answer all the questions one forgets to ask while working on a project. These are questions that a good client would ask, so it's better if they get addressed in the safety of the classroom.

There are certain issues that I need to focus on with my current calendar:

- Ease of usability: it is not easy for mothers to interpret how much their baby weighs, even though there is a key explaining it. It is impractical to have to count 3000 squares for a 3kg baby and difficult to make an estimate too.

- Hierarchy- different levels of information must be within the chart depending on how detailed the mother would like to look at it. One day if she is in a rush, she might like to look at the size of her baby visually, but when returning from the doctor's office, she might want to compare the specific size of the baby in centimeters to the figure on the chart. It would be right for me to allow for both options.

- Every element in the system must have significance. This means that the grid I placed behind the calendar has to have a reason although I put it there to look 'pretty'. Oops! It then evolved into a 'flexible' calendar where the user makes the boxes for themselves, but I definitely agree that if everything else on the page has significance, this should too. Maybe it could be used to record appointments or even comparisons of the estimated figures to the actual baby figures. It could then be kept as a memory for when the child grows up.

-Using monthly increments is perhaps too big of a progression, especially since babies grow so fast! So I could keep the same structure but divide each arm into 4. This will allow for a detailed (weekly) and less thorough view (monthly) I think this is a good solution to the issue of hierarchy.

back to work...:)

P1.1 PROCESS/C

Okay!
so I finally found a solution for the "TOO much paper to waste." since I needed around 356 pieces of paper that are 80 cm x 50 cm each. I thought of REUSING that paper again, after using it as a calendar.
You know how precise people like to keep things organized...well, I thought of doing a box template on the calendar itself, so when the person is done with the calendar, the calendar can be turned into a storage box...so at the end of the year you would have 356 boxes for your office paper work or whatever! :D
here's the digital sketch I did yesterday.
UPDATE: MEETING WITH PORNPRAPHA TODAY:
-I need to rethink the layout again, be as divergent as I can. make some hand sketched
-2 be as precise as possible. (tuesday 27th of January, 2009 at 3:18 p.m)

P1.1 Process/c

Thinking of transferring my own experience into my calendar, my groups experience since they're my target audience, I thought about playfulness versus seriousness.

Playfulness
color
orientation
characteristic of lines
Seriousness
structured
static
and how to embed both into one organized system.

All that brought me to this idea of Tetris blocks; the layout, the playfulness, and the structure. So, my goal now it to translate that experience into my calendar.

process 1.1/c

Researching about calendars I learned that every year the Arabic calendar changes (Hijri calendar). However, the normal calendar is always the same accept for Feb. it changes.

Holidays is different in every country and we can use that in a calendar.

System-is also important because it allows people to know, minimize everything into shapes (form).

*Theme/concept
*Colors
*Audience specific
*grids
*list of events
*layout

Who's my calendar for?
who's my target audience?
how to set up a system

-So I am not trying to understand the system I am using for my calendar and use the concept to help generate the forms.

-What I basically want to do is to create iconic symbols mostly abstract shapes to represent days or months.

-I'll also use shapes & forms that represent holidays.

P1.1 Process/c

Fashion some how related to the future and some time has the connection to the past. ( the present event is about the future) that's the most important thing.
Thoughts
  • getting an exact idea of what i'm mapping.
  • Focus about the important information (filter)
  • Try to get a good strong concept and what you want to visualize.
Visualize
  • shape
  • line
  • numbers
  • gray scale
  • 2d space
Sytsem
  • Language
  • Vocabulary
  • Syntax- rules of relationship
What i did--->
i wasted so much time to create forms that work within the system and visually. So what i did is that i went to fashion design studio class and started to to take pictures of interesting things and got a bunch of ideas.

- i found this paper that they use to draw in their designs and then cut them out. ( a process before the sewing. it would be interesting if i found a way to use it as a grid.

-these are basic machine stitches.
when sewing the first thing they do is select a stitch, set the stitch length, and set the stitch width.

-I found the stitch designs are very interesting, some the geometric and some are organic.
i got the idea of using these shapes in my calender.
