process color

I started to think of ways of how to create my calendar and how will it look like by the end. i started to think of how am i going to represent the variables with out using any representations or type. and for me it is a very hard limitation, but i thought of it as an advantage to minimize the confusion and increasing my learning curve.
the first sketch i did for the calendar was this.
but some how it too complex and i did not know where to try and start and before like it so much i threw this idea and tried to choose another way which is much more systematic and much more understandable, because my topic is really complex, so i don't want to confuse my audience.

To reduce the numbers of the circle i created a big circle around the map and then i can connect each date with a line to its country.

2 circles: months + days - connect the month with the day and the country

process 1.1/a

This is the second sketch I did for my calendar...

I did this in the first week of the semester and I was working on the same concept a calendar for children hospital....The idea here was to make a flexible calendar with moveable numbers and a plain box above for children to draw their own theme of the month..

The numbers in the right is movable children can just move them and place them in the empty triangle icon to tell the day and write bellow things they want to write or draw ..and the white box above shows a child sketch of a theme of the month ..

Dero,P1.1 Process/a

I started researching, I found couple of websites have the average for boys and girls from birth till
10 years old. I wanted to focus on this period because it's very important for the parents to know their daughter or son's height, to know if he/she below or above average, so they can see if there is something wrong..
By the research i figured out that boys have different average than girls. That changed my idea for my concept a little because now i am doing a calender for two genders not just one. Therefore, I thought of doing one scale for them and make the left side of the calender for boys and the other side for girls, and the parents could cut the side that they don't want, so the calendar will be more interactive than before.

Maria, P1.1 Process/a

Well... its been a LONG process... of a LOT of research and a lot of experimentations.
I can't even begin to count how many times I started over to try to create something different.
so, lets take you on a little journey through the process of my work then....
First started off with a big scale calendar, quite a t
ypical one really, but this one has a tab system and on the right foldable tabs to mark whether you have plans during the morning or night.

Above is the first calendar I made, embossing the dots myself
The second part was designed with the intension in mind that Blind or partially blind people most commonly use a horizontal format to read.
So then I came up with this:

this was more compact, being about 9x4|... continuing with the the tab system, and now using my colour area to help partially blind people navigate the weekend quickly.

But then... changed my format again... to make my calendar
EVEN more compact and functional, I made the dimensions  45x3" so it is then foldable to be placed in my clients pocket.

now.. to be pushed... EVEN further... so.. now that my calendar is about navigation, and to not have 12 pages, i'll do research on maps; so that I can make a bigger foldable calendar.
So ya... thats all ^_^*

P1.1 Process/a

I had trouble with the bringing out the
meaning
in my calendar; and always seemed
to focus on
the
things to do before you die part when I really
needed to focus on the worth and value of time
you have left
.

These are some of the visual experiments I
tried
to emphasize on time and counting down.

Here is the idea of joining the dots

so that the user is involved with time
and is conscious of it. And at the same
time he/she unfolds what activity is on
the
to-do list for that particular day.

I also thought of time in the context of
life literally and tried to find something
symbolic but not immediately literal. So
I used the pixels of a tree (tree of life)
as
a grid for the days & months.

Mario, P1.1 Process/a

I kept working on my birthday calendar idea and I think the calendar is working better now. After talking to Pornprapha I started thinking more about functionality rather than design. The main goal now is to make a calendar that works.

I wrote down some questions related to the functionality of my calendar.
- Does it need to be a month-by-month calendar? or could I do it all in one page?
- How much space should I leave for the names?
- How big should it be to have more functionality?
- How can I make it easier for the user to remember someone’s birthday?

With these questions in mind, I designed a layout for my calendar that helps the user organize their birthday list by how close they are to the birthday person. As you can see in the image, vertical lines on the top and the bottom represent the months where the number of lines represents the month (1 line for Jan, 2 lines for Feb, and so on). Then, the dates are listed in one centered column leaving space to write names on the left or the right of the number. On the left, the user can write down the names of the most important people and on the right of any other person. The way they would know is by the 5 stars on the left and only 1 on the right.

It is a very simple layout, but I think it is functional. The next step will be creating the cover and making the design more interesting, and more appealing to the audience.

Color Study!

Ok! because i am using pattern for my
Calender to differentiate between important days and regular days~ I thought of using
colored patterns instead of plan colors!

Those are the colored patterns i picked and thought about.

This is the first test i used to see how it would look like:
Peter said that using one color with its shades will be better than having muli-colored pattern

Those are the other patterns i tried out and I'm more into the pink one. because I'm going to use this for Eid-days, and pink makes sense because its a cheerful color and Eid is a cheerful event!!

Generally speaking, first I thought of doing a calendar for a plastic surgery clinic like for the patients. Clearly then after researching and thinking I came up with a complete different idea. The calendar I am working at now is a calendar for a children hospital, my audience or main interest is children like what they are interested at, how I’ll make a calendar that would help them to learn more …etc
Right now I am still researching and working on the system itself. I am looking for symbols and icons that interest children and I am thinking of how to develop these forms and abstract them in a way that would work with my concept.

My older process post got deleted for some reason! :S so I'm posting this again >

The first concept I came up with was, good days to die, meaning, days in the Hijri calendar in which people who die are considered good (not necessarily though). Like, dying in the last ten days of Ramadan. I wasn't so sure if it made sense to some people! we don't know when we'll die and I didn't really need to get deep into religion SO I changed my concept completely.
The second concept I came up with is making a detailed calendar for precise people. I have always wanted to get a VERY VERY detailed calendar.
Why do calendars have to be in months, weeks and hours only? why not have a calendar that include every second of every minute of the year? WHY NOT?
For my research, I thought of looking at different calendars around my house and ask myself:
How are they organized? How did they work the typograhy? What's bold? What's underlined? Why those lines? Why all those colors? Are the calendars detailed enough? Is there enough space for the user to write plans? to do-lists? goals? I wanted to be inspired and figure all that by looking at real examples around me.
Here is some of the things I found around my house! It might inspire you guys as well! :D
excuse my REALLY OLD scanner! -_-;;

Process 1.1

Starting off the semester with Peter and Pornprapha, we were all anticipating an intensely creative project. We were right of course, given the task to design a yearly calendar using NO type or image; just line, shape, color and numbers. The first thing we did was divide the process in chronological order. Defining the concept and identifying a specific audience is the first step. While identifying an audience we thought of various questions to answer such as; Who needs to measure certain amounts of time? What are the main purposes of using a calendar? More questions we asked ourselves were, what exactly is a calendar? Does it have a specific form of measurement? Keeping these questions in mind, our studio class began a group brainstorm session on the diverse concepts for measuring time. We came up with a wide web of connections between concepts and audiences. I found this type of brainstorming really helpful because more than one person was able to voice their thoughts and spark different ideas. While defining these terms it became obvious that a navigation system was a vital part of the process. Discussing systems in class we came up with a general definition for the term; a controlled manipulation of variables and constants.

In addition to the limitations given to us was the use of black and white. Throughout this first phase of the project I was still experimenting with different concepts and gathering research. After this I tried to focus on creating a dynamic use of space using only black and white form. Under these limitations, designing a layout was more focused on macro and micro elements and the interaction between them. During the second week was the start of adding color to the design.

P1.1 Process/a

The 3 animals which are evenly spaced from one another in the zodiac circle are generally considered to be good matches. Rat, Dragon and Monkey ; Ox, Snake and Rooster ; Tiger and Horse and Dog ; Rabbit, Sheep and Pig are suitable for one another. Matching symbols on the Zodiac chart indicate compatible signs.

The signs that are opposite each other in the Zodiac Circle chart are poor matches. Generally a Rat and Horse; Ox and Goat; Tiger and Monkey; Rabbit and Rooster; Dragon and Dog; Snake and Pig will not get along with each other. These signs make poor partners in love and in business. Family members who have opposite signs may experience friction and disharmony in the home.

Each person is a combination of the sign of the year they are born in as well as influences of the time of day and the larger cycles of the zodiac. You may find that even though a person was born in a year that would seem to make you a poor match, the other influences that you share balance the ill effects of incompatible signs and make for a very good relationship — or cause problems in even the most compatible signs!

The start

A calendar I really though that it’s a very unique project, because we are limited to only use numbers and abstract shapes, at first it was very hard to come up with a concept. And I think that I was trying really hard to think of a concept leaving this idea of functionality as well as systems, and that is where I though that I got stuck.
Discussing some possible topics with the other students still got me confuse with what I am trying to do.
So we came up with a lot of ideas like: age, trees, academic and so on. But for me I was still lost so what we then did was try to find who will e the audience maybe it will be easier to find the solution. But again for me I was still confused and lost.
After all this I started to think about types of calendars, and then I though of the ATP (The Association of Tennis Professionals) Tennis World Tour. Because the tennis season takes the whole year so I thought of doing a calendar for the tennis tour.
With that idea in mind I had to think of the things about the tennis tour which I can use in the calendar.
The variables that I was considering:
• Date
• Place
• Level
• Surface
Then I started to think of ideas of how I can represent those ideas for example with lines and color. But before w had to start with black and white so that we can get used to the negative and positive areas, and then as we progress we can use color.
I am aiming to learn more about system and how they work.

Starting off the semester with Peter and Pornprapha, we were all anticipating an intensely creative project. We were right of course, given the task to design a yearly calendar using NO type or image; just line, shape, color and numbers. The first thing we did was divide the process in chronological order. Defining the concept and identifying a specific audience is the first

P1.1 Process/a

what i should be thinking about while starting the calender ->

  • -First i should define the concept and think about, who is it for? where is it used?
  • -we have limitation of using line, shape and color.
  • -The calendar should be understandable to the point that people could easily navigate it.
  • -It should be printed; There is no limitation on size, shape and color.
  • -the most important thing is to think about the audience.
  • -I should think out of the box and use my creativity and challenge myself.
  • -Variables must be controlled and manipulated.
  • -I have to keep in mind that color is constant. I should start with black and white and then converting what i did into a series of gray's; from there i should start using color.
  • -what is going to control the variables is my concept
  • - a calender is a map of time; to begin with I'm going to use a 2d space.
  • -i have to make sure that i would map the time and space. what is it that I'm going to tell about time.
  • -i will try my best to think of something that is out of the ordinary whether my concept is about day or a week or maybe morning vs night.
  • -i have think about the parts that I'm going to use and how these parts work together systemically.

Research and concept

At the of the begining project, the teachers assigned for us to design a calendar.
And in order to design a calendar they sit rules that we have to follow:

1-The calendar has to have no text
2- The viewers should be able to navigate through the calendar.
3- consider the size, hierarchy, and the height.
4- Use abstract shapes; not silhouette.

In addition to this, the calendar must have a system, which means having a language in your design to communicate with your targeted audience.

Therefore, I begun my project by looking up what does calendar means, and the type of calendars.
The calendar is a system of time keeping that defines the beginning and the length and the division of the year.
I also researched about the type of calenders, and I figured out that there are many types of calendar. For example there some well known type of calendar as the Hijri calendar, Gregorian calendar, solar calendars, and etc.
Also, there is a type of calendar that is called Digital Calendar, which means online based calendar, and computer base calendar.
Moreover, there is a paper base calendar that have so many shapes and sizes, which is designed to serve the needs of all kind of people.
I also discovered an interesting type of calender that is called Wall or Family calendar, which is a large calendar usually located in the central place where everyone in he family has access.

For my Calendar, I was thinking of doing a calendar for people who do certain type of diet.
The calendar would be for a month, because the diet will be only for one month, and this month would be divided into four weeks. Each week will serve certain food category, for instance, the first week will be the Vegetable and fruit week, after that the Carbohydrate week and so on.
The calendar will be a count down calendar, because personally when I do a diet I start to cross days out and its like a count down for me. I also write some notes in each day, for example at the end of the second week I eat a piece of chocolate as an award.
So, for my calendar I'll experiment different sizes to represent the amount of food for each day, and set a space for diet people to write their comments and what they did in that day.
