I wrote down some questions related to the functionality of my calendar.
- Does it need to be a month-by-month calendar? or could I do it all in one page?
- How much space should I leave for the names?
- How big should it be to have more functionality?
- How can I make it easier for the user to remember someone’s birthday?
With these questions in mind, I designed a layout for my calendar that helps the user organize their birthday list by how close they are to the birthday person. As you can see in the image, vertical lines on the top and the bottom represent the months where the number of lines represents the month (1 line for Jan, 2 lines for Feb, and so on). Then, the dates are listed in one centered column leaving space to write names on the left or the right of the number. On the left, the user can write down the names of the most important people and on the right of any other person. The way they would know is by the 5 stars on the left and only 1 on the right.
It is a very simple layout, but I think it is functional. The next step will be creating the cover and making the design more interesting, and more appealing to the audience.
