P1 final

Final Calendar.

The dots represent every hour. The lighter ones represent day, the dark ones represent night. So the user can see how many hours of daylight there are. The numbers at the top, that are represented as 1[12], 2[12] etc, are the 12 months in numbers. And the one's on the right = 01[07] = every day in a week. The numbers on the left = 0:00 = hours in a day. The calendar shows every hour in a year, to make people value time.

P.1 Method activity - 3

here is the final piece. where I put all the aspects and meaning I was working on together. I used curved blocks, to represent the growth of the child, to represent weeks. since the mother depends more on the weeks of when the child grows instead of month. and i played with the gradient of color, and made the beginning of every gradient a growth stage. it is all explained in the piece. enjoy ! :D

Final Calendar

So... it was quite a bit of process finishing off my calendar.
I honestly was very happy with my project, but Pornprapha and Levi said they wanted me to redo ALL of it.. cause of 6 SIMPLE lines I placed on the calendar so I would be able to know where to fold the paper.
It took a while to reason with the idea of poking ALL those holes again. but I did it. And I was honestly proud of myself.. I really felt I pushed myself with this project and I honestly worked very hard.
Packaging wise, I needed a protective case for my foldable calendar (accordion fold)... so I tried to make one out of the plastic material from a bin bag and lining it with hard yet bendable card. However, it didn't work very well and looked quite tacky! So I used Levi's idea about finding a packaging for it. I edited it quite a bit to fit the calendar perfectly as well as keeping it looking neat and tidy.
Selecting the actual packaging was tricky, as I had to consider about the technicalities of how a blind person would be able to pull the calendar our and put it back,

Don't have images.... but will soon when I get it back!!! ^_^*

P1.2 Final

THE REDO

After the critique, I used the comments to redo my calendar and improve it to a better level.
As you know, my target audience is management in restaurants. The first column is for incoming stock/shipment, and that's what the dark blue circle represents. The second column with the lighter shade of blue circle is for signature or name of the receiver. I shaded the columns in light grey to indicate that it's a column to fill in. The black and white squares on the left side represent the months. The dates that are shaded in light blue represent holidays.

I find this calendar is much more successful than my previous one. After the critique and the redo, I have a better understanding of system.

learning objectives...

1. Develop visualization (information) in which formal variables have been systematically developed and managed (i.e. type point, face, orientation, justification / line weight, texture, length, orientation / color / 2D spatial grid)

I think my visual elements are quite harmonious because the only variable I have used is that of line. I have embedded meaning by varying line weight, the angle of the line and by grouping lines. In this way, the growth pattern of the fetus can be more easily seen.

2. Develop visual abstractions of conceptually based information (encoding/decoding)

The reason I chose line as my visual abstraction is because it is the most basic visual and in our minds connotes a connection when placed between two points. It was important for me to join my different variables, so using a line was the most fitting visual.

3. Use analytical thinking to create a structure (organizational basis) for the visualized concepts using hierarchy and visual syntax

Hierarchy was not so much of a major element in my piece as all three of my data groups were of equal importance. By making one stand out more than the other, I would be confusing the viewer.

I made sure that my chart was placed on one single page because if not, the viewer would have to flip through and the total growth would not be evident. I organized my chart so that the data moves from left to right and all the variables begin at stage zero. All variables are mapped parallel to each other so that they can be seen as a 'whole'.

4. Identify a target audience (literacy and functional needs) and develop a strategy of usability and accessibility

I identified a clear target audience but I don’t think it is visually specific to that group as it functions for doctors too. This is the part of the project that confuses me because we are supposed to think about functionality more than visuals, but I think that sometimes visuals play a key role in targeting a specific group, even if the functionality remains the same.

5. Work within and utilize the limitations (i.e. black white, 2D, visual only) to develop semantic performance of syntactic elements

I didn't really have a problem with the color limitations because I usually restrict myself to using black and white. I even had to push myself to use the color orange because I didn’t think it was necessary, but in the end I am glad I did.

The reason I picked the color orange is that it does not have connotations of the sex of the baby. Also, I needed to choose a bright color that would make my black lines stand out.

FINAL

This was my final phase which I had in last wed.
instead of dived it into months ..I divided my calendar into 4 seasons instead of months. I placed the months in the seasons and in each month I placed the 7 days.. I also worked with the color as levi told me and I used darker color for summer and lighter for winter ..

the days however are placed in chaos inside the month itself bellow each other because its playful and kids are playful ..

For the icons i used the ones I used before..

dero, P1.1 Final

I used lines to show days, and I changed the colors between each month to show it's a different month, and coloring weekends with black, to separate weeks from each other, make it long and small to be easy to stick it on the wall of your children's bedroom, to know their average height.

Mario, P1.1 Final

After the final critique on Monday, I got new ideas about how to do my final calendar. I was told that sometimes we get too attached to our work and that prevents us from coming up with new ideas. Sometimes is good to step back and rethink our process and explore with different ideas. With that in mind, I decided that it was not necessary to write down the names of your friends for every birthday. We only need a reminder of those days and we can usually remember whose birthday is it or check on facebook. So I changed the function of my calendar. Instead of being a calendar to write down the name of your friends on their birthdays, it is a calendar to remind the user that there is a birthday(s) on a specific day. All the user needs is a small, portable, and functional calendar to mark down the birthdays and use it as a reminder.

The final product is a 2” x 3.5” card that can easily fit in your pocket, wallet, or purse and it has the 12 months with their respective number of days. Each day is represented by a candle that the user can fill in to remind that there is a birthday going on that day. For the packaging I thought that a gift box would be appropriate since gifts and birthdays go together.

With my final calendar, I was able to achieve the main objectives I had since the beginning of my process: functionality, portability, and ease of use.

On the attached pictures you can see my calendar (front and back) and the template I used to make the packaging.

Final

i still had problems with my system because of gaps and the distances between the countries its harder for the reader to see it. for the final i decrease the spaces of the countries and made them all equal and i lined the Davis cup tournament because its different than the rest. it was very hard and i bumped into a lot of walls but looking at the final now i am very happy and satisfied.

critique

Add ImageIn the critique I got a lot of useful feedback .I took the feedback in consideration and used it as a reference for my final form for Wednesday. The feedback helped me a lot to improve my final form which is great.

Things they asked me to work on:

-guide lines-its confusing and not aligned.
-The idea of placing the months on the side is not suitable for kids
-The color coding-work on it-
-Size- make it smaller
-Its very decretive
-Try different arraignment for the symbols

final

from the last critiques i was told that the use of lines to connect the season's with the fashion show makes the poster look crowded. the thing was i was afraid to use other shapes other than stitches. but then i tried to use geometric shapes and color to connect seasons with shows, and it actually worked. i even changed the calender from vertical to horizontal, wish visually is better to read.
i have to change the 2010 position because it looks like a stack of numbers. and perhaps leave gaps between one season and another.
below is my fixed calender and my final>

Final 1-

This is my final result after some fixations :

A- Making the horizontal lines lighter.
B- Making the vertical lines white instead of black.

P1.2 Final

This is my final calendar. It's a layout of only one month (january).

The critique:
- system is inconsistent.
- could've been used in black and white, and would have been more suitable for the audience or easier to read.
- use the color to represent an element, not just a design.
- size is not suitable for the audience, make smaller.
- line stroke isn't even.
- icons do not go with the system, it is a weak point in the calendar.
- the space between the numbers need to be modified.
- the column division between arabic and latin is confusing.
- figure out the size, and how it can be practical.
- bind it for presentation.
- explore different formats
- don't change audience last minute :s

Fatma J, P1.1 Final

Notes from the Critique:
* Try to make the months continuos as in having them all in a raw!
* Try to color the background with light color "gray" to distinguish the spaces you have.
* The square blocks: try to makes them a set of 4 instead of 6: easier to read!

This is the over all image if the Calendar
i tried to make the background light gray but i hated it so much!
but i did take the other advices into considerations
the 4 square blocks indeed make it easier to read!!

I'm happy that the project ended safely.

P1.2 Final.

Critique 02.02.09
-don't be stuck with a straight grid.
- it's overwhelming
- a little too tiny
-play around with the size, make it a poster size or something that can be hanged on the wall and kept as a memory (which i did before, but turned out to be gigantic)

-not  re-doing my work. but I will keep in mind these comments for the upcoming projects!

revised calendar

I got several tips from my critique:

-I need to make my chart larger so that it is more easily read.

-At the moment the lines mapping the data are confusing for the eye, as they are at a sharp angle. This can be improved by widening the chart's axes.

-Differentiating with line width was a good idea to separate the change in the fetal measurement techniques.

-It is not necessary to have a magnified section of the chart, but instead just make the whole chart bigger.

-Use color to separate the chart from the lines themselves, because by having them both colored black, they merge into each other.

-Find a way of making the crossing of the line through the chart more clear and exact.

-I also made my key more harmonious and simplified by using parallel, horizontal lines instead of arbitrary shapes.

So here are my amendments…

P1.2 Final

P1.1 Final

This is the final solution i came up with.
I tried to make it pocket size or (agenda size) so you can include it in your daily agenda...or whatever you're using.
It was a challenge for me to include all information in one little piece of paper, but I figured out a way to include all that.
so these sheets I designed work as keys for your agenda in which you can interact with. for example, if your busy from 8.00 am untill 10.20 am you cross the dots all the way from 8 am to 1020 am. this will tell that you're busy at that time. Any extra appointment details will be added somewhere else in your own agenda.
so basically this calendar tell you when you're busy or when you're not...in minutes!
