1.1 Comprehensive sketches

i've tried to include all the horoscopes in the calendar, but i did that really late didnt have the time to figure the system, and i think it needed color coding, where we just had to use one color.

dero, P1.1 Comprehensive sketches

Experimenting colors were very difficult thing, specially I wanted to show the difference between boys and girls height, but we were using just one color, I wanted to choose baby pink for girls and baby blue for boys. Using one color limited us a lot, so i thought of using black and its all shades for boys, and pink and its shades for girls, and to repeat the scale so I can cut the poster into two parts one for boys and another one for girls.
* The dots represents one day, and by putting 30 shapes from them next to each other represents month, and by repeating it for 12 times that means one year.
but when we came to critique, a lot of comments were discussed, like the idea of putting the dots next to each other not on top of each other..because i need to show the growth and time with each other..

i tried to develop symbols for the calendar, i looked at existing symbols of love, money and health:

and tried to develop some:

1.1 Comprehensive sketches

i started working and developing my calendar which is a year of aquarious luck 2009.
i decided to make it
circle, because it is the luck cycle. and it has a bad or good luck period of three months.
i choose the color blue which is the color of the aquarious.
here are the sketches:

Najla, P1.1 sketches

I reduced the number of numbers by putting the numbers of the months in one circle and reduced the number of days in the middle. I used the lines to connect the months with the days.

I feel like there are too much numbers that could be confusing ,so i am trying to replace the 12 months with circles and keep the numbers for the days.
For example, This is April, 1

I placed the circles in the map of the middle east. and for each date for each country theres a circle.

Najla, P1.1 sketches

1)I took the national days for countries in the middle east and tried to place them in the circles.
the circle are the months and the numbers in the circles are the days.

2)I removed the circles and just kept the numbers. I gave each months a color and each month
has its National days. But its confusing with every circle having all the days of each month

P1.1 Comprehensive sketches

Color testing. I chose colors that relate to chefs/restaurants.

P1.1 Comprehensive sketches

Typeface experiment. What is suitable for my audience. Final choice is Myriad.

Since my audience in the beginning was related to chefs, and wanted to map seasonal vegetables and fruits. I played with the form of fruits that could be used as icons or design in the calendar.

Mario, P1.1 Comprehensive Sketches

These are some images of my sketchbook that show my process...

After experimenting with different systems I decided that my final calendar will be based on days. This means that the user will navigate through the calendar day by day instead of doing it month by month. I will post more information about my final calendar later...

Fatma J, P1.1 Comprehensive sketches

After deciding the color i will have in my Calendar that will represent Eid, PINK
i researched images for pink pattern and those are the Samples i liked and found
that they are "useful"
then i applied them into the Calendar!

but, with those, i am not convinced that the final form will be like this.
So, I researched more images, photoShop brushes and so on...

Those are some Samples i found during research that attracted me because of
their geometric pattern and some how they look like the Islamic patterns
and  that i might use them.
i applied some into the Calendar. I also didn't like them and felt that there is something
out there to be used i my Calendar and not these patterns i found!

P.S  Purple feels dark but the patterns are interesting. so, I'll stick to pink. WHY?
again, pink is a cheerful colors which represents tender love and peace. and in Eid, those
feelings are spread all over the Air!! =)

So, Finally, and all the thanks to Deviantart.com, i was able to find what i want. A pattern that
has Islamic Characteristics, simple, Clean and Clear.

those are my beloved Samples!

never mind the Gray boxes, this is the old ones.
the new ones are without them and i believe that i posted them
in my previous blog!

So, I'm going to use the final patterns ;)

Comprehensive Sketches p1.1/b

Those are the Final sketches I did for wed. class. My calendar is for children therefore I tried to simplify it as much as I can to make it easier for  children to understand. My purpose of this calendar is to teach children from age 4-7 the order of days.I want them to learn how to Differentiate each day.
Day:
      ----->weekend-fri,dat
     ------>weekdays-sun,mon,tues,wed,thur

I am trying to come up with a way to teach children how to learnt the order of the days and to differentiate between the different days of the week.I want to do that alphabetically in a way that they would learn how to count and learn the order of the days.In the following sketchs from the lower bottom below it shows sunday till monday and the reason why sunday has the biggest panel is because its the first day of the week and its the most important and it goes smaller as we move upward. The two separated panels on the side are the weekend days fri. and sat.
What I'll be working at to improve the calendar- Size vs Order
and how to come up with the right order.
I am also thinking of a better symbols to symbolize the days.

P1.1 Comprehensive sketches,

Process

I started taking the stitches and connecting them somehow to create a system. Drawing them in illustrator didn't visually look good. but at the same time i kept on remembering that i should think of the system more than the visual. but the system wouldn't work and wouldn't be understandable if my abstract shapes are not clear. so basically i was not satisfied.
.

So what i did is that i went to the fashion design studio and stitched the designs that i found interesting. it was really a different experience
and at the same time it was really fun. so the nect sept was me taking these stitches into photoshop and working on the system.

for my calender each month was going to be a different pattern, and when ever there is a spring/summer fashion show held on fall for example i would put the pattern of the spring/summer in the fall. but it looks confusing when you look at it visually.

So what i did is that i represented each 5 days with a pattern and weekends with another.
Then i placed the season's at the bottom each 2 connected to each other with a line, because in the fashion world they represent the fashion shows according to two seasons together (spring/summer) and (Fall/Winter).
In the Critique we discussed about the placement of forms and weather i should keep the seasons horizontal or vertical. Also since fashion show is about the future and whats going to be in style the next year, i was told to think about adding one more year 2010 to show the connection between the past and the future. I need to do more research and see where i can go from there.

if you can make sense of these, i'll buy you chocolate...
