Fatma J, Fatma R, Abeer K, P3.1, The Final

Fatma J, Fatma R, and Abeer, K had printed their catalogue, cut it, and had done the binding too.

this is how the final catalogue looks like: ( Low-Quality image)

we are so proud of the result. We really had fun doing this catalogue =)

Fatma J, Fatma R, Abeer K, P3.1, final-1

we decided upon a grid and each one of us did her design..
so, after that we put them together for printing:
PS, before that, we had to know where each page's placement because we will be
printing back-to-back:

The final spreads (in order):

the cover

the insert page

the spreads

experimenting with grids :

the idea we had for the grid/spread
is to have in one page the image, persona, and scenatio
and in the other page a typographic composition that shows or fits the lifestyle.

Fatma J, Fatma R, Abeer K, P3.1, process/b

here, we tried to do some grids,
but the concept we have is every character, according to color personality, they go together.

Here we go again :
another catalogue, a continuation on the 2nd project in addiction of including

"latin and arabic typefaces that fit the lifestyle".

then we had a workshop in inDesign ... how to layout pages and so on !

Fatma J, p3 process/2

after the journey of searching typefaces, these are the typefaces where the journey ended up and im proud of the results.
each typeface does represent the lifestyle its connected to.

RED: have the loose/grace  feeling yet have some sharp edges which can act both Romantic and Aggressive

BROWN: have 2 wights of strokes which in my opinion acts like two powers/level "Stamina"

Black: very formative/ typical/ documented-like typeface. very serious

PINK: playful/ organic/ joyful/ "as i wanted to be: charming"

BLUE: it feels and looks wide in terms of spacing. but the letters are closed into itself  "preserving"

Fatma J, p3 process/1

Choosing typefaces:

my previous cubic typefaces and some Arabic suitcase typefaces
this is just a process of searching some fonts.
because i'm not sure how to pick the typefaces now. but i'm leaning towards a typeface that will show the personality of the person form each lifestyle:

Fatma J, P3 introduction

Monday
April 6th 09
a link between a lifestyle and a typeface.
-----------------------------------------------
Group project
Group members: Fatma R, Fatma J, Abeer K
Goal: creating a new catalogue with previous component+ the typefaces. "Arabic+Latin"

Lifestyle: a way person lives::
Context, use, character, convention <<>

Criteria of selecting a typeface:
- Usage (screen Vs. Print)
              ( Legibility Vs. Expressiveness)
- Character: "Voice"
- Concept/ Theme
- Identity
- Designer's intension
- Familiarity Vs. Unusual
- Receiver's Message.

Resources:
- Suitcase.
- Online: font shops
-Books.
-Trail+Error

Time Line:
WED 8th: inDesign Demo/ Typefaces are selected and done!
MON 13th: inDesign file setup/ Photographs links
WED 15th: System in Place
MON 20th: Production DEMO

Sunday 26th Final 2:00--4:30

Fatma J, p2 Final

this this the final for of the front page:
each lifestyle has its own quarter "space"
the folding will be the separator

the first fold will be from top to bottom
then from right to left
then there will be little -tail-like arms.. each will be folded the opposite side
one of them will have the title (_life) written on it.

*** minor things where suggested to be fixed for the final...
and it got fixed and everything is ready to print =)

Fatma J, P2 process/g

its really boring when i think about a typical folded poster, so i tried thinking for it to have a shape but still maintaining the size and having the MAX folds which is (4-folds)

this is the first example did:

the form is very geometric. works in the theme i want to have "cubic"
then i tried filling this shape with the info i have. "content"

the sections that were created are so obvious, "4 quarters" that encouraged me to really choose this shape and fill it with all of the lifestyles =)

Fatma J, P2 process/f

The final images for each life style

Fatma J, P2 Process/e

systems: color system: based on CMYK percentage

Grid system: i tried breaking up the images and having a-collage-feeling

typeface system: searching for some cubic and pixel-based typefaces which are both readable and reliable.

Critique: "Do less, Learn More"
Persona: write about the "belief, value, activities"
Scenario: Day in the life of each style.
Dimension: the scale of images
typeface: could create your own based on the created grid.

Fatma J, P2 process/ d

now that i decided the content:

5 life styles= 5 colors

1-RED= Romantic/ strong/ out going/ aggressive.
2- PINK= protection/ secure/ charming/ cute/ gentle.
3- BLUE= sensitive/ self-control/ faithful/ preserving.
4- BROWN= stamina/ patience/ sustainable/ responsible.
5- BLACK= showy/ mysterious/desire/ professional.

for every category i'll have max of 3 images (fare enough to show the dimension)

i'll concentrate on the outer/external appearance of the person that have the chosen lifestyle.

the name of my Catalogue will be  (_life) "shift life" as in changing life :)

systems
GRID:
im thinking of having a cubic system as having the layout structured.

TYPE:
as for the type, i want a type that is edged as sharp. maybe a pixel-based typeface or a cubic one. both would work with the theme.

Fatma J, P2 Process/ c

after deciding the theme of my catalogue as in having the content depending on color personality,
there are some limitations given in the production process which are:

production wise:
-50x60 cm
- 2 sided
-CMYK 4 colors
- 4 MAX folds
- fit in 21x26 cm envelop
- could have die-cutting

*** the catalogue does not have to have a concept!!!
*** you can use illustrations instead of images--- [ you are the designer]

WORKING ON SYSTEMS:
1- images system
2- grid system
3-Type system
4- Color system
5- folding system

----- Scenario
-----life style: in terms of  (thinking/ value/ activities)

Fatma J, P2.1 Process/b

The way i thought about the 5 lifestyles is:

different people but same personality choosing different things but they all have the same color.
"Color Personality"

But, after we talked more about it and when i saw how the other had done their lifestyle, i realized that i have shifted a little bit from the track!
but this is what i did in terms of my thinking:

those are different things from different people, not necessarily having the same style, but they all have the same personality and some common element about how they live their lives.

The color black Dignified and impressive without being showy, people who wear black want to give the appearance of mystery, but their preference may also indicate a suppression of desires and worldly aims, suggesting hidden depths and inner longings.

Blue: Soft, soothing, compassionate and caring, Blue is the color of deliberation and introspection, conservatism and duty. Patient, persevering, conscientious, sensitive and self-controlled, Blues like to be admired for their steady character and wisdom. They are faithful, but are often worriers with somewhat inflexible beliefs and can be too cautious, and suspicious of flamboyant behavior.

Brown: A Brown person has stamina and patience, tending to be very solid and substantial, conscientious, dependable, steady and conservative. Browns are not impulsive, and may be inarticulate and tactless but they love responsibility and are reliable and kindly. If you chose Brown, watch out for a tendency to be obstinate and inflexible.

Pink: This color embodies the gentler qualities of Red, symbolizing love and affection without passion. Women who prefer Pink tend to be maternal. Pink desires protection, special treatment and a sheltered life. Pink people require affection and like to feel loved and secure, perhaps wanting to appear delicate and fragile. Pink people tend to be charming and gentle, if a trifle indefinite.

Red: The color of strength, health, and vitality, Red is often the color chosen by someone outgoing, aggressive, vigorous and impulsive—or someone who would like to be! It goes with an ambitious nature but those who choose it can be abrupt at times, determined to get all they can out of life, quick to judge people and take sides. Red people are usually optimistic and can’t stand monotony; they are rather restless and not at all introspective, so they may be unaware of their own shortcomings. They find it hard to be objective and may blame others for any mishaps. Quiet people with a preference for red may feel the need for the warmth, strength and life-giving qualities of the color, or they blanket their true feelings under a sober exterior. Red is usually chosen by people with open and uncomplicated natures, with a zest for life.

Yellow: The color of happiness, wisdom and imagination, Yellow is chosen by the mentally adventurous, searching for novelty and self-fulfillment. Yellow usually goes with a sunny and shrewd personality, with a good business head and a strong sense of humor. It is the color of intellectuality and all things to do with the mind. Yellow folks are usually clear and precise thinkers who have a good opinion of their own mental capacities and who have lofty ideals. They may at times tend to shun responsibility, preferring freedom of thought and action.

# if i were to stay with the images i picked and the way i thought about the all lifestyles, i have to name the lifestyle itself. For example, i can name the black "Mysterious life style" however, if i did name them, can i do the expanding of the lifestyle what we are asked to do as the next step?

i am not sure whether to continue this path, or go back to the way everybody is doing!

though i like it this way! but i need to make sure of my position right now before it's too late!

Fatma J, P2.1 Research/a

Lifestyle VS. Personality

Personality
Almost everyday we describe and assess the personalities of the people around us. Whether we realize it or not, these daily musings on how and why people behave as they do are similar to what personality psychologists do.

While our informal assessments of personality tend to focus more on individuals, personality psychologists instead use conceptions of personality that can apply to everyone. Personality research has led to the development of a number of theories that help explain how and why certain personality traits develop.

Components of Personality

While there are many different theories of personality, the first step is to understand exactly what is meant by the term personality. A brief definition would be that personality is made up the characteristic patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that make a person unique. In addition to this, personality arises from within the individual and remains fairly consistent throughout life.

Some of the fundamental characteristics of personality include:
  • Consistency - There is generally a recognizable order and regularity to behaviors. Essentially, people act in the same ways or similar ways in a variety of situations.

  • Psychological and physiological - Personality is a psychological construct, but research suggests that it is also influenced by biological processes and needs.

  • Impact behaviors and actions - Personality does not just influence how we move and respond in our environment; it also causes us to act in certain ways.

  • Multiple expressions - Personality is displayed in more than just behavior. It can also be seen in out thoughts, feelings, close relationships, and other social interactions.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Lifestyle
In sociology, a lifestyle is the way a person lives. A lifestyle is a characteristic bundle of behaviors that makes sense to both others and oneself in a given time and place, including social relations, consumption, entertainment, and dress. The behaviors and practices within lifestyles are a mixture of habits, conventional ways of doing things, and reasoned actions. A lifestyle typically also reflects an individual's attitudes, values or worldview. Therefore, a lifestyle is a means of forging a sense of self and to create cultural symbols that resonate with personal identity. Not all aspects of a lifestyle are entirely voluntaristic. Surrounding social and technical systems can constrain the lifestyle choices available to the individual and the symbols she/he is able to project to others and the self.

The lines between personal identity and the everyday doings that signal a particular lifestyle become blurred in modern society.

For example, "green lifestyle" means holding beliefs and engaging in activities that consume fewer resources and produce less harmful waste (i.e. a smaller carbon footprint), and deriving a sense of self from holding these beliefs and engaging in these activities. Some commentators argue that, in Modernity, the cornerstone of lifestyle construction is consumption behavior, which offers the possibility to create and further individualize the self with different products or services that signal different ways of life.

My Opinion:

A lifestyle does not create a personality.

If someone is living a High class lifestyle, doesn't mean that he likes Classical Music or drive Classical cars or even act high and mighty.

a way to live your life is not equal to the way you act and behave

Fatma J, P2.1 Process/b

after the last Critique, we had the chance to retake our photos in terms of Quality or angles.
but i didn't retake mine because i want to know how far my ability can go with the things i did so far. Do i really need to retake some photos? i didn't feel the urge to do so however.

we were put into groups at this day
and were told to take out photos and arrange them according to life-style

Team members:
Aisha
Fatma Jassim (me)
Sahwa
Asma

Life Style we decided are:
1-Childhood
2- Teenagers
3-Working age
4-Old

and took all the 10 Categories 10x10= 100 <<>

after the tiring exercise, we were told, again, to do the same task but individually. However, this time, we have the access to use classmate's images to come up with 5 different lifestyles

But, we don't have to use 10 images to describe the lifestyle
but the only thing we must be and have: is Divergence!

Fatma J, P2.1 Process/a

i took pictures around university and at home!
Those are required:
8x8 cm
CMYK
300 dpi
all images should be cut (imagine the amount of time it took)

i didn't think abroad, my only concern was to fulfill all the 10 categories required.
but after the Critique and after looking at my classmate's photos, i realized that and knew how can we look into things in different angles and prospectives.

Fatma J, p2.1 Project Brief

The things i understood and some notes:

the theme of a catalogue.
experimentation process about doing and thinking.
look into different lifestyles? what is a life style? does it differ than personality?

have to take 10 pictures of 5 given categories and 5 optional ones.
the given are:
-Cars
-Phones
-clothing
-furniture
-food

the idea is to go out and look into things and observe the people around us
I didn't go out for some reasons. WHY?

because some place doesn't allow you to take pictures and will put me into embarrassing situation.

However, this doesn't mean to stop and not to do the task!!
instead of going to the outside environment, why not looking into the inside environment which is firstly home and then university. there are many things that we are used to that we don't notice!

Fatma J, P1.1 Final

Notes from the Critique:
* Try to make the months continuos as in having them all in a raw!
* Try to color the background with light color "gray" to distinguish the spaces you have.
* The square blocks: try to makes them a set of 4 instead of 6: easier to read!

This is the over all image if the Calendar
i tried to make the background light gray but i hated it so much!
but i did take the other advices into considerations
the 4 square blocks indeed make it easier to read!!

I'm happy that the project ended safely.
