Starting off the semester with Peter and Pornprapha, we were all anticipating an intensely creative project. We were right of course, given the task to design a yearly calendar using NO type or image; just line, shape, color and numbers. The first thing we did was divide the process in chronological order. Defining the concept and identifying a specific audience is the first step. While identifying an audience we thought of various questions to answer such as; Who needs to measure certain amounts of time? What are the main purposes of using a calendar? More questions we asked ourselves were, what exactly is a calendar? Does it have a specific form of measurement? Keeping these questions in mind, our studio class began a group brainstorm session on the diverse concepts for measuring time. We came up with a wide web of connections between concepts and audiences. I found this type of brainstorming really helpful because more than one person was able to voice their thoughts and spark different ideas. While defining these terms it became obvious that a navigation system was a vital part of the process. Discussing systems in class we came up with a general definition for the term; a controlled manipulation of variables and constants.
In addition to the limitations given to us was the use of black and white. Throughout this first phase of the project I was still experimenting with different concepts and gathering research. After this I tried to focus on creating a dynamic use of space using only black and white form. Under these limitations, designing a layout was more focused on macro and micro elements and the interaction between them. During the second week was the start of adding color to the design.
