I never realized that there were so many types of calendars but I guess that's because humans have always had the need to map time, and necessity is the mother of all invention after all...
By looking around the world it is evident that the variety of calendars used are due to religious, historic and cultural purposes, whereas modernity and the business world has increased the popularity of the Gregorian calendar. The most interesting thing I learned during my research is that there is such a thing as a 'complete' and 'incomplete' calendar. the early Roman calendar was incomplete because they had no way of differentiating the days in winter, so they ended up lumping it altogether. The Gregorian calendar is a complete calendar because each and every day is mapped out. These are things I need to think about while creating my own calendar:
- who is my target audience?
- what are their specific needs?
- does it have to be complete or incomplete?
- what should the interaction be between the human and the calendar, and how does this fit with my concept?
- how detailed must it be i.e. include days of the week and timings too?
- what is my visual style?
